Well, That Was an Experience!

There’s a wise saying: “Experience is what you get when you don’t get what you want.” Many children learn this unwrapping Christmas presents and many adults learned this difficult lesson in 2020. Nonetheless, a new year offers a new beginning, new opportunities to start modernizing, and we are positive that 2021 will be better for us all.

First, a quick recap

In 2020, we covered a lot of topics in VirtaMove blogs. Containerization drew a lot of interest. Our top five blogs in 2020 were:

  1. Running Applications in Windows Containers: The Unintended Performance Consequences
  2. Application Modernization: Moving Legacy Apps to a Modern OS is the Best First Move
  3. How to Run Legacy Windows Apps in a Container
  4. Moving Windows Server Applications by Hand: It’s Hard and Here’s Why
  5. Should I Containerize a Legacy App?

2020 literally ended with a bang for many IT shops

As the year drew to a close, thousands of IT shops globally discovered that their network infrastructure was compromised by security software like FireEye and SolarWinds – ironically, software installed for protection. More than 425 Fortune 500 companies and most federal government unclassified networks downloaded a corrupted SolarWinds update.

Modernizing IT needs to be prioritized in 2021. Government and corporations will need to develop new modernization plans, new budgets, and new projects, quickly. Procrastination is no longer an option. 2021 is the year for starting modernization.

Imagine what you might accomplish if you start modernizing right now

Not 6 or more months from today – right now, before the first month of the year begins to wane. With a small team and with the help of automated migration software, you could feasibly move applications from hundreds of old Windows Server 2003 and 2008 servers to modern hardware running Windows Server 2016 and 2019. Our productivity metrics for automated application migration support that estimate. Take a moment to consider that every month of stalling on modernization increases security risks and cuts into this productivity: from hundreds of servers, to dozens, and finally to just some servers.

What would it mean for your business to move off hundreds of legacy servers and modernize to new physical or virtual hardware?

If you start modernizing IT now…

…in no time, you could close security exposures, get better performance, do more work, and stretch the life of your applications while you carefully plan how best to enhance or re-architect them in the future. For a modest infrastructure investment, you could solve hundreds of IT security and performance problems.

Most IT shops would be delighted with such tangible progress in just a few short months.

So, here’s to the New Year, new beginnings, and progress. The VirtaMove Team wishes you the very best for 2021.
